The influence of tempering and annealing on the microstructure and sliding wear response of G350 grey cast iron

The present study investigates the tribological properties of G350 grey cast iron in various microstructural conditions. Quench and temper heat treatments were conducted at four tempering temperatures, from 400 °C to 700 °C, produce a range tempered martensitic disc samples. Pins slow furnace-cool annealed coarse pearlitic microstructure with some areas ferrite. These samples then used pin-on-disc sliding wear tests. Hardness decreased temperature, 400HV 200HV °C. two spheroidized carbide discs produced higher volume losses than acicular due instability oxide layer on softer substrate. Subsurface deformation was visible pins which consisted deformed cementite lamellae direction strained ferrite grains. • Tempering 500 matrices. 600 carbides equiaxed Slow annealing mix pearlite featured significant subsurface deformation. All combinations oxidative as dominant mechanism.
